Etna rises right behind Catania, so getting there is easy, but the two sides of the volcano are reached in different ways. The south side has the cable car, the bus and most tours; the north side is greener and quieter, but you need a car or a tour.
This guide covers the drive, the daily bus, the tours with pickup, the airport and two questions people often ask about Pompeii and Vesuvius. To choose between the tours themselves, see Etna tours compared. For the cable car and parking at the top of the road, see the guide to the Etna cable car.
The quick answer
Nearest city: Catania, about 35 km and 50 to 60 minutes to Rifugio Sapienza. Nearest towns: Nicolosi (south, about 18 km to the refuge), Zafferana Etnea (east), Linguaglossa (north, about 18 to 19 km to Piano Provenzana). By bus: one AST bus a day, about 8:15 from Catania station, back at about 16:30; check the AST timetable; no bus to the north side or for sunset. From Taormina: about 1 hour to 1 hour 15 to Rifugio Sapienza. Pickup tours: from Catania, Taormina, Giardini Naxos and Syracuse. Pompeii: on the mainland near Naples, about 7 hours' drive with the ferry.
Which town or city is closest to Mount Etna?
Catania is the closest city, about 35 km from Rifugio Sapienza. The closest towns are Nicolosi on the south side, Zafferana Etnea on the east side and Linguaglossa on the north side.
Nicolosi is the gateway to the south side: the SP92 road winds up about 18 km from the town to Rifugio Sapienza in about 25 minutes. Zafferana Etnea, on the east side above the Valle del Bove, is linked to the same refuge by the other end of the SP92. Linguaglossa is the gateway to the north: about 18 to 19 km on the Mareneve road to Piano Provenzana. All three have hotels and restaurants and make a quiet base if you want an early start.
Times below are typical and depend on traffic, the season and the weather.
| From | How | Time | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Catania | Car via Nicolosi and the SP92 | 50 to 60 minutes | Leave early; the car parks fill by about 9:00 in summer |

| Syracuse | Tour with transfer | An 8-hour day in all | The simplest option without a car |
How do you drive to Etna from Catania?
Take the road north through Gravina, Mascalucia and Nicolosi, then the SP92 up to Rifugio Sapienza: about 35 km and 50 to 60 minutes. For the north side, drive to Linguaglossa and take the Mareneve road to Piano Provenzana.
Rifugio Sapienza, at about 1,900 m, is the end of the road on the south side. The car parks around it are municipal and paid, with tickets from the info office and some shops, and in high season they fill up, so arrive by about 9:00. Above the refuge and above Piano Provenzana, the tracks are closed to private vehicles; only authorised 4x4 buses go higher. In winter, carry snow chains, and know that snow or ashfall can close the roads for a while.
If you would rather not drive mountain roads, the Etna Trek Beyond the Tourist Trails picks you up in central Catania and stops in Trecastagni for coffee and sandwiches on the way up. It then leaves the cars behind: about 550 m of ascent on foot from about 1,850 m, with no cable car.

No car, no lifts, a real hike: pickup in central Catania, a naturalist guide, the Silvestri craters and the 2001 lava flow, up to roughly 2,400 m. Shoes, poles and jackets lent. Rated 4.9 from 1,819 reviews.
Explore the trek beyond the tourist trailsCan you take a bus from Catania to Etna?
Yes, but only one a day. The AST bus leaves Catania at about 8:15 from in front of the central station, passes Nicolosi and reaches Rifugio Sapienza at about 10:15; it comes back at about 16:30.
The bus is run by the Azienda Siciliana Trasporti. It takes about 2 hours each way and gives you roughly six hours at the refuge: enough for the Silvestri craters, the cable car, or a guided hike that meets at Rifugio Sapienza, if its start and end times fit. The days of operation vary around holidays and Sundays, so check the current timetable on the AST website before you plan around it.
The bus does not work for sunset tours, because the last one back leaves in the afternoon, and there is no bus to Piano Provenzana on the north side. For those, drive or book a tour with pickup.
How do you get to Etna from Taormina?
By car it takes about 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes to Rifugio Sapienza. Most visitors staying in Taormina book a tour with pickup in town instead, and several go to the quieter north side.
Taormina is about 52 to 55 km from Catania along the coast. From there, the south side means driving round the volcano to Nicolosi; the north side, through Linguaglossa and the Mareneve road to Piano Provenzana, is the natural choice for a day out from the Taormina coast.
The Etna Morning Trek from Taormina (4.9 from 548 reviews) picks you up in Taormina and nearby for 6.5 hours, with about 1.5 to 2 hours on foot round extinct craters near 2,000 m, a lava cave and a tasting. The Etna Hike, Cave and Tastings from Taormina (4.7 from 766 reviews) is a similar 7-hour day. Etna North and the Alcantara Gorges with Lunch (4.8 from 2,944 reviews) picks up in Taormina, Giardini Naxos, Catania and Linguaglossa and spends 8 hours at low altitude: the 2002 lava front, an easy 3 km walk to the Monti Sartorius craters, a lava cave, lunch in an Etna village and the Alcantara Gorges.

Etna from Taormina without driving: pickup near your hotel, a morning walk round extinct craters, a lava cave and a tasting with almond wine.
Check dates for the morning trek from TaorminaWhich Etna tours pick you up in Catania, Taormina or Syracuse?
Most of them. The easy crater tour, the sunset walk, the trek beyond the tourist trails and the lift-included package all pick up in Catania; the Taormina tours collect you in town; and a dedicated tour comes from Syracuse.
Etna Craters, Lava Cave and Tasting from Catania (4.8 from 4,396 reviews) collects you at your hotel in Catania, morning or sunset, and drives to about 2,000 m for easy walks round old craters, a lava cave and a tasting. The Cable Car, 4x4 Bus and Guide package (4.3 from 1,823 reviews) adds a round-trip transfer from central Catania to the cable car and 4x4 tickets and a guide. The guided summit hike has an optional pickup from Catania; other summit treks meet at Rifugio Sapienza, so you need a car or the bus.
From Syracuse, the Etna Morning Hike and Food Tasting (4.9 from 237 reviews) is an 8-hour day with transfer. It is a long day, because the road passes Catania on the way, but it saves you planning two legs of travel.

Etna the easy way: hotel pickup in Catania, morning or sunset, gentle walks round old craters up to about 2,100 m, a lava cave with helmet and torch, and a tasting. Fine for young children. Rated 4.8 from 4,396 reviews.
Explore the easy craters and lava cave tourWhat should you know about Catania airport and volcanic ash?
Catania-Fontanarossa is the nearest airport to Etna. When the volcano emits ash it can limit landings or close for a day, so check your flight status and leave a spare day around your hike.
In September 2026, landings were reduced on 24 and 25 September and the airport closed for the day on 27 September, with flights diverted to Palermo, Comiso and Trapani. Earlier in the summer there were similar disruptions during the July and August eruptions. These closures are usually short, and life on the ground carries on as normal.
Two simple habits help: do not book the hike for the day you land, and check the tour's messages and your airline the evening before. How the volcano is watched and why routes change is explained in is it safe to hike Etna.
Plans can shift with the volcano: this trek gives a full refund if you cancel up to 24 hours ahead, and lends shoes, poles and warm jackets.
Check dates for the trek beyond the tourist trailsIs Mount Etna close to Pompeii?
No. Pompeii is on the Italian mainland in Campania, near Naples and Vesuvius, while Etna is in Sicily. By road it is about 7 hours from Catania to Pompeii, crossing the Strait of Messina by ferry.
The confusion is common, because both are famous Italian volcanoes. Pompeii was buried by Vesuvius, the volcano above the Bay of Naples, in AD 79. Etna is on the east coast of Sicily above Catania, roughly 400 km away in a straight line. They do not fit into the same day, and most visitors see them on separate trips.
If you are in Sicily, Etna is the volcano to hike. You can walk on lava flows that are only a few years old, look into steaming craters with a guide, and see the Valle del Bove, the huge horseshoe valley on the east flank where much of the 2026 lava flowed.

Is Etna bigger than Vesuvius?
Yes, much bigger. Vesuvius is 1,281 m high; Etna is about 3,400 m, more than 2,100 m higher, and covers about 1,200 square kilometres.
INGV measured 3,403 m at the rim of the Voragine crater in 2024, and the figure changes with each eruption. Vesuvius has a base circuit of about 20 km; Etna's footprint is many times larger, and the Parco dell'Etna takes in 20 municipalities. Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe outside the Caucasus and one of the most active in the world, and since 2013 its high, uninhabited part has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The size has a practical side for visitors: Etna is a high-altitude hike, with cold wind and thin air near 3,000 m, even when it is hot on the coast. Pack layers even in summer.
